I’ve been having a tough week. Fumee has been stressing me out to the point of being nauseated. I’m working non-stop and I have a lot of financial obligations that at times seem overwhelming. For instance, today I work a 15 hour shift by myself, from 11 AM until 2 AM, and in the last seven days I’ve had over $5,000 of bills due. You can see how this sort of thing, day in, day out, can wear one down. I’m working on a plan for next month to make things easier on myself. You know, find some more money so we have a bigger cash reserve, take mandatory “me” time to relax, and to get back into the gym for stress release and health reasons. Some times I wonder why I got myself into this crazy business! I should have been a work-from-home consultant or some crap. Entrepreneurship is no picnic my friends, it is equal parts good and horrible.
Anyways, I came home from work bummed and dreading my shift today, so Anthony took me to our local dive bar for a beer. Only, by the time we got there it was 11:30 and they closed at midnight. We had one beer, and then decided to try and make it to the gas station by midnight (which is the time you can no longer buy beer in Texas). So at 11:50 PM we took off walking towards the gas station (we had walked to the bar with the dog, so we had no car). About half-way there we started wondering if the gas station itself was even open, as it seems to close awfuly early most days. But soon we saw it in the distance, with the lights on, and we decided to run for it. I felt like I was on the Amazing Race, running for the finish line, only I was running for Dos Equis instead. I’m happy to say we made it with seconds to spare. But seriously, why can’t you buy beer after midnight here? That’s just silly, this is A-M-E-R-I-C-A! (Get this, in Texas you can’t buy liquor after 9 PM and not at all on Sundays!)
Anyways, I’ve decided to cut back on the beer in the future anyways. And the pizza. I really do want to do these things, but when you’re stuck at Fumee all alone and you’re hungry, there’s only a few options:
1. Order food (what delivers? Pizza. Pretty much the only choice.)
2. Eat the snacks we have here, which are chips and candy.
3. See if anyone left beer (which happens all of the time) and drink that.
So my diet consists of pizza, chips, candy and beer. Yes, I know that’s disgusting. Wait, it gets worse. On the off chance I make it through a shift without doing 1-3, I’m usually starving by the time I get off. There is exactly one place on my way home that is open late, and that is Taco Bell. So I probably eat Taco Bell 3 times a week now. It’s so gross.
So, my resolve this week is to go grocery shopping this Sunday and make two big meals which I will then portion out into tupperware and freeze so I have a portable, healthy meal to take with me to work. I have been good about going to yoga weekly, but now I would like to add a spinning class weekly, too. So there you have it, my Make My Life Better in March plan. Wish me luck.
When I had my job at a golf course working on the driving range after dark, everything would be closed except Taco Bell by the time I got out, and I’d be starving from the physical labor. I know the predicament. You could always get a sandwich at your grocery store but those are usually pretty expensive. Granola bars and yogurt can be filling after a long day (yogurt is OK dairy to eat at night because it aids in digestion).
You’re doing a lot, don’t be so hard on yourself. Good luck.
Texas seems to be a more socially conservative state; it makes sense it would have stronger restrictions on beer than most other states.
According to some sources, Texas is about 28-30% Roman Catholic and almost a quarter Baptist (who can’t drink any alcohol). I also heard there are already about 400,000 Muslims (who also forbid alcohol) in Texas, soon approaching half a million!
