Impacted wisdom tooth

After I recent trip to the dentist, I was told that I had to have my three impacted wisdom teeth removed. Of course, I can’t afford that right now, so I just planned to ignore the issue. However, as luck (?) would have it, I saw an ad in the paper that very week for a research study on post-surgical pain medication, and they were testing it out on people who needed wisdom teeth removed.

I called the number and asked about the study. I was told that I would have to have at least three impacted wisdom teeth to qualify.

Check.

One had to be on the lower jaw.

Check.

I had to be physically healthy.

Check.

So I decided to go for it. I get my wisdom teeth taken out by a board certified surgeon for free, and I also get financially compensated.

The downside is I have to stay overnight in the facility to be monitored, because I will be taking an experimental pain medicine. I’m not quite sure yet what that means- has it been approved by the FDA already? Have any rats died from taking it? What if it doesn’t work? Will I be in immense pain? No idea. But I am going in on Monday for a physical exam and x-rays as a final screening, so I will ask then.

This is maybe the weirdest thing I’ve ever done, but I can’t pass up the chance to get my wisdom teeth removed for free!

This is what Julie did in High School. They give you some post surgery pain meds, then a little while later ask if it helped with the pain. Then the next set of meds…wait…”did it help?” And so on. Needless to say, her experience wasn’t as fantastic as my percoset-induced “happy time,” but you definitely can’t beat free board-certified surgery. Using an oral surgeon in itself reduces the pain of having your wisdom teeth removed PRETTY substantially, from what I hear. Best of luck!

  2. That’s good to know. Because I’m nervous. Julie didn’t like, grow hair on her chest or a third arm afterwards, did she?

    No…not yet, anyway.
